We spent a few days last week in Cornwall with Hugh's family. Apart from spending some time in Plymouth sorting out Ben's flat for his return to uni, we also went to the beach for the day.
When the children were little we used to spend every summer holiday with the family in Cornwall and we would spend one day of the holiday at Widemouth Bay. This is a bit of a trek, as the family house is in South Cornwall and Widemouth is on the North Coast. However, it was always a special day, with holes being dug,
rock pools explored
and swimming done in the sea.
Ben asked if this time we went down we could relive the old times and spend a day at Widemouth - weather permitting of course. And were we lucky? Yes! The weather was absolutely superb. We set off with a boot full of blankets for sitting on, pasties and doughnuts for lunch, a flask of coffee and swimming towels and costumes. The only things missing were the spades, which were rapidly purchased once we arrived!
I found the whole day extremely poignant. Knowing that this was probably the last time we would all have a holiday time together like this; that Penny was going off to board at college on the 5th September; that Ben would be returning to uni for his final year on 11th September. The summer was ending and an era in our life was also ending. Lots of new things to look forward to, and many happy memories to look back upon.

Looks like you had such a good time together....a great family memory.
Poignant indeed. But a day full of good memories.
What a touching post. I'm very aware that we only have a couple summers left together before my oldest heads off to University.

Aw, this is a really nice post, Becky. Quite bittersweet though, isn't it. So glad you had a chance to get away and this looks like a fantastic place to escape to!
