Apples galore!

One of the jobs I got done last week was to finish picking all the apples off the trees in the backgarden. I have been a bit naughty this year and a lot of them have fallen and rotted on the ground or been eaten by the wildlife - but then again, perhaps I have been good to the wildlife!

By the time I actually came to strip the trees there weren't a huge amount left, well, there were quite a lot, but so many of them were tiny and not worth keeping, so they went on the compost heap I am afraid.
The trees were here when we moved in 18 years ago and we have never been sure whether or not they are eaters or cookers. We have eaten them occasionally, but more often I use them as cooking apples and I intend to peel and flash freeze this little lot and then we will be able to have apple pie, crumble and flapjack during the winter - yum!

I would love to have an apple tree :) Apple crumble is our absolute favourite dessert.

Having fruit trees always seems like a good idea, but we have a hard time just keeping up with the tangelo tree in our backyard. It's a hybrid tree and the fruit is like a tangerine (or orange) and a grapefruit mixed. The fruit is actualy quite delicious, but we had a bumper crop last year and I couldn't give them all away! So many citrus trees here in Arizona - everyone is trying to give them away! I think I need to invest in a juicer this year...

I'm afraid we were late to harvest the apples and pears this year.
