Precious photos

Gosh, I can't believe how quickly the year is passing - even if we are having horrible weather and it isn't at all spring like yet!

The first Sunday in the month, again! The fourth of this year and so time for Storytelling Sunday 3 - 'Pick your Precious' - organised so wonderfully by Sian of From High in the Sky. If you pop over to her blog once you have read my story you will find her story for today (always a brilliant read) plus links to lots of other wonderful stories.

So, what have I chosen this month?

My shelf of photo albums. These are all the photos I have taken since Hugh and I got engaged, 27 years ago, up to 2009. I am slowly moving them into slip in albums as the 'sticky' ones I have been using are starting to eat the photos.
Ah yes, and these albums. These are photos I have taken from when I got my first camera when I was 8, up until Hugh and I got engaged! There are a few of my first scrapbooks too, from before I knew about scrapbooking and stuck photos and memorabilia and journalling into the old sugarpaper books to keep everything together.

And these are the most current photo albums, from 2009 to present day, although most of last year's photos are waiting to go into albums as I only put them in once I have scrapped what I want to scrap! And yes, although I take digital photos and store them on the computer, I still print out the majority as I love to look at real photos in real photo albums!

So, why are these so precious? Well, they hold such wonderful and dear memories - of my first meeting with Hugh, of my younger days, of people who are no longer with me, of my children from bump to present day, of wonderful holidays, of special occasions and also of the mundane. I quite often take down an album and look through it, either on my own or with one of the children. When my Mum comes round she likes to look through the older ones with me, as does my sister and her children. So not only are they wonderful memories for me, but I get to spend time with people I love and share those memories with them too. Hugh would also tell you that I use them to prove a point to him about, for example, when we decorated a room, or when we went on a particular holiday!

So, to finish, here are a couple of photos of my old scrapbooks!

Even did journalling here! It was actually the diary I kept whilst I was away with the school in Scotland.
I bet we all remember Strawberry Shortcake!
A bit of journalling next to each photo and a ticket for a boat ride
Receipt from the bar where we had an icecream and the umbrella from the icecream.
Don't forget to pop on over to Sian's blog to read some more 'Pick your Precious' stories for April.

Love seeing the old scrapbooks. I had a few of them :-)
Totally agree that photos are precious. I love looking through my uncles when I visit home.

Truly precious! I really need to get our non-digital, non-scrapped photos in some sort of order. Reading you story today reminded me that I used to have a scrapbook when I was growing up but I have no idea what happened to it. (:

Ah, sugar paper scrapbooks! Your collection is wonderful, and how special to have so much of your life recorded like this. Am sure your Mum must love being able to have her memories reawakened too ...

I love this! As soon as I read what you were going to show us today I got excited to see..because you know how much I admire your photo collection! You have all the pictures I wish I had in many ways - exactly the same era and with so many thing I can recognise. I only really got going taking pictures when we got married and our early albums give me so much pleasure now to go through. I'm with you - print them out and enjoy them!

So now you need a family tree to hang those pictures on... I too have about a dozen sugar paper scrap books from before our hobby had a name - before it was a hobby!

Lovely to see your old scrapbooks. I filled many like that and exercise books too. Sadly, all long gone.

I definitely think that children should be taught to scrapbook to keep a record of life. Well done for you, I so wish I had done this. It is why I am an avid project lifer now, I totally get the value.

Thank you so much for sharing this today.

I like that you still print digital photos out. It's something people forget to do nowadays and it makes me sad that there are no albums to flick through. Thanks for sharing.

So many precious scrapbooks! It looks like as far back as 1980 you were scrapping the photos and also doing journaling--and, saving memorabilia.

That's not Meigle in Perthshire in that scrapbook, is it Becky?!

I love that you have a place for all your albums to be displayed together. Mine are all over the house, and some of them are definitely headed for a Storytelling Sunday post. What could be more precious than the photos that recall our wonderful times with friends and family?

oh how lovely! and great that you kept them all too. I got rid of some of my early scrapbooks - before i scrapbooked properly that is! Truly precious memories.

I had a scrapbook like that that I made in high school - everything was deteriorating so badly I had to disassemble it and move it into a new album. I tried to maintain the integrity, but it just isn't the same.
