First Day in San Francisco

Well, of course, as you have already seen, we went to the Golden Gate Bridge! We had actually bought a Hop On/Hop Off Bus tour before leaving the UK and the pick up point was only 5 minutes walk from the hotel. The initial idea was to hop on, do the whole tour and then go back and do the sights we wanted to see on the second time round. However, as we were approaching the bridge the guide said that the forecast for the next day was not so good and fog was expected to come in, so if we wanted to see the bridge without fog it would be a good idea to do it now. So, when we reached the bridge stop we got off and walked all the way across and back again.

What we didnt' realise was that although it didn't feel very warm, it was very sunny and the sun got to poor Hugh's nose. It got very burnt and blistered - very painful for quite a few days.

When we had finished at the bridge we jumped back onto the bus and took it round to Pier 33 where we were getting the boat across to Alcatraz. As we had some time to spare we had a fast food lunch of a hot dog each - yum!
Then it was into the queue to wait to board. Hugh spent the time queuing looking through his binoculars - not at Alcatraz, but back into the gift shop to watch the tv as England were playing in the European Cup and he wanted to try and see what the final score was!

The trip over to Alcatraz gave us some wonderful views of San Francisco and then of Alcatraz Island itself.

Once we disembarked we made our way up to the prison and got the audio tour. If you ever go, get the audio tour! It was so worth it and made the visit extremely interesting.
Hugh trying out the facilities in the cell!
On our return to the mainland we managed to find our way around the public transport system and get a train to Oakland Athletic Baseball Stadium where we had tickets for the game against the San Diego Padres. Oakland won, which was extremely pleasing  and made it a very enjoyable game :)
Then it was back on the train and back to the hotel to collapse into bed, completely exhausted, but extremely happy having had a wonderful day.

Boy you definitely got a lot in for your first day. Sorry to hear that Hugh burned his nose so badly.

You DID get a lot done! You were wise to do the bridge on a sunny day..it's amazingly cold in that fog!
