So, I have lots of stories to tell this year! I thougth I would start off with this one though. One that immediately came to mind, 1) with the theme and 2) because we have recently been to see 'The Hobbit'. The Hobbit? Yes, my precious! A ring of course!
My wedding ring! This is so precious to me and means such a lot. I have worn it nearly every day since we got married, just over 25 years ago. Nearly every day? Well, when I was expecting Ben, back in 1989, I put on so much weight and was so swollen with fluid retention, that I couldn't get my wedding ring on. I was devestated! I had been brought up that to have a child out of wedlock was the worse thing that could happen and so to me, going along to the doctor's surgery, or the hospital, or even going into a shop, heavily pregnant and not wearing a wedding ring was shameful to me!
So, what did my wonderful husband do? He took me into the Luton Arndale Centre and went wedding ring buying. He said that it was a little embarrassing, buying a wedding ring for someone heavily pregnant (as he too had been brought up with the same views). However, a new wedding ring was found and I wore it until Ben was about 3 months old, when I could finally get my proper ring back on again.
But here is the ring I wore whilst I was pregnant. There was no way I could ever get rid of it, even though it is much too big for me now! Not only was it a symbol to show I was married, but it is a symbol of how much Hugh loved me and how much he would do for me to make me happy.
Of course some of you reading this story might think what was the fuss about! After all, having a baby 'out of wedlock' these days is nothing out of the ordinary. Well, let's just say that we are/were old fashioned back then!
If you would like to read more about precious items then hop over to Sian's blog where you will find links to lot more stories. Don't forget that Storytelling Sunday takes place on the first Sunday of every month. See you then!

I love this story and totally understand how you felt. I think it's great that you have your wedding ring as well as your pregnancy wedding ring and I'm not surprised you've never wanted to part with it.
What a wonderful story and a wonderful husband. Thank you for sharing
A wonderful story - and not so old fashioned in my view - as it is one I share. I think it is lovely that you still have both your Wedding rings - thank you for sharing. J xx
I can totally understand where you were coming from with this one! I think the feeling would have been the same round here :)
A perfect precious Becky and a lovely way to start off a new year of storytelling. Thanks for this.
LOL ... Yep, a ring is the first thing that sprang to my mind when I saw the word precious :-) Your story is lovely, I fully understand why you wanted to get a larger ring. Your husband was wonderful to take you shopping for another one.
Thanks for sharing your precious story with us. Happy 2013. Cheers from Bordeaux, France
I completely understand how you felt back then.....and what a wonderful husband you have!
Totally understand the need to have a ring. It really unsettled me the day I forgot to put it on b4 I went to work in a way I never thought it would. I now leave it somewhere I can see it at bedtime as I cant wear it at night.
Such a wonderful husband you have as well. Thanks for sharing :-)
i had to smile at your reference to the hobbit as i've just posted about it!
Lovely story, the only time i've not worn my wedding ring was when i was pregnant!
I can so completely relate! I've had my wedding band resized twice already (I had tiny fingers when I got married). And right now I can't wear it again, but holding out to see if I shed some weight. How sweet & thoughtful of your hubby to provide you with a back-up ring!
What a lovely thing for your husband to do, knowing what it meant to you. Thank you for sharing the story with us!
I can understand the feelings too - how lovely of Hugh to be willing to go and buy another ring with you. Completely agree you need to keep it too. Wookie lost his wedding ring (he couldn't wear it whilst working on the Railway) and I replaced it a few years ago at his request. Rings are such an important symbol I think.
What a lovely story & a wonderful husband x
I totally understand how you felt, I wore mine on a chain around my neck when it didn't fit !!
what a lovely husband you have that he could do that for you in spite of feelings of embarrassment and yes that ring is very precious
Lovely story...and lovely hubby!
Alison xx
You have a wonderful and understanding husband. A wedding ring is indeed a precious item because of all the meaning behind it. With hormones raging in pregnancy, it is even more understandable how you felt not being able to wear your ring. As I said, your husband was certainly understanding.
What a wonderful story! I love that he bought you another ring to wear during that time. If we still held those "old-fashioned" beliefs, I believe the world would be a better place.
What a thoughtful husband! That makes him pretty precious too :). And how lovely to have kept and treasured both rings ...
What a sweey story, Becky! And I would have definitely saved that additional wedding band myself. :o)
This is a very emotional story with a heap of precious love in it. A wedding ring is such a personal thing and how very thoughtful of your husband to understand that.
What a heart warming story Becky. A ring was the first thing that sprang to mind when I read the word precious too! I've already shared the story of mine though.
A wonderful story, made more wonderful by a wonderful husband who understood just what you needed.
What a great story! I'd be tempted to wear that ring on a chain around my neck.

What a wonderful story Becky and how great of Hugh to get you another one to wear. Definitely precious.
