Instantly I am awake. It is light outside - no sunshine, but brightness coming through the blind in the ensuite means I can see everything in the bedroom. I squint to read the radio alarm clock at the end of the bed. It is no good, I can't see it without my glasses, it is just a green blur. I roll onto my side and peer at the cockerel alarm clock on my bedside table - 5.42am.

I know this shows the wrong time - I didn't have my phone or camera with me at 5.42am! |
Why have a woken this early? Then I hear it - the pigeon which has started sitting on the satelite dish on our outside wall, just by the bedroom window. It goes on and on. Can I be bothered to get up and open the window to shew it off? No, too early! I roll over and pull the duvet over me. It is slightly chilly in the room and I am only wearing a cotton nightdress. Obviously in the night I got warm as I was outside the covers. The summer duvet soon warms me up. Hugh rolls over to face me - 'love you' he murmurs and falls back to snoring. The clock on my bedside table is ticking and the central heating boiler clicks in and I hear the hum of the pump as the water begins to heat up. I think about writing this piece and grab my notebook from my bedside table and start writing. I think that if I get up early I can type this up before going to work. The peace is shattered - the radio alarm has been set to buzzer and its raucous buzz fills the room. Hugh staggers over to the dressing table and turns it off. The day has begun.

I know this scenario well....with us it's seagulls!!
Ah the dawn chorus! Yep Wookie gets woken up by them too.
Oh gosh, wonderfully described! I think you've touched on something which resonates with many of us, Becky. How nice to have a 'love you' dropped in the middle of your moment, though. Before we had more roof insulation, it was the heron plodding across above our heads which woke us. And what an unusual clock face too. Thank-you so much for joining in this month and it is, as ever, a pleasure to see your link there :).
The bit about not being able to see the time without my glasses really hit home today with me. I'm the same now...though I guess sometimes it's easier not to know. I'm thinking of last night's last-day-of-school-revelry..
A great read.
I love when the weather gets warm enough here that the birds are the first thing I hear when I wake up in the morning. I realize reading your piece how lovely it is that the alarm rarely goes off now that we're retired. Nonetheless, we continue to be early risers.
I adore that Hugh mumbles "love you" in the midst of a sleep! I am so happy that I rarely have to wake to an alarm and I am conditioned to not hear the Chosen One's.
I have I to say I'd prefer the pigeon to the fox that woke me up at 2am this morning :/ x
A familiar scenario for many of us it seems! Perfectly described. With us it was the starlings, teaching their babies to fly, at 5am, from the back fence to our bedroom windowsill!
An early moment...but a perfectly described one!

What a great moment - one I think many of us can relate to.

I'm glad the pigeon didn't wake you up TOO early but, instead, gave you the opportunity to snuggle down and enjoy a last minute or two of warmth and rest before the start of your day.
We are all so similar aren't we? I love your moment.
Such a great moment
Love your early moment. I'm thinking maybe we'll keep the robins instead of a pigeon. :)
